Tuesday Update – Worldwide Fluorite

Thomas Cotterell

OUR theme this week is worldwide Fluorite and we have certainly got some great specimens for you to look over.

Included within these are many specimens from Arvid Pasto’s famous worldwide Fluorite collection, some of which are figured in his book published in 2009. There are also a number of very fine older Okorusu pieces from a German collection and some really great smaller French Fluorites.

The East Coast Gem, Mineral & Fossil Show in Springfield, MA opens on Friday (14th) and runs through until Sunday (16th). This year, the organizers have put together a stunning exhibition entitled, “Gem & Crystal Treasures”.

This magnificent display is worth the visit by itself, featuring the priceless Rocaille Golden Easter Egg, produced in 1902, by Peter Carl Fabergé, Imperial Jeweler to Tsar Nicolas II in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Then there is a suite of carvings by the famous gem carving Dreher Family out of Idar-Oberstein, Germany; The Dreher’s have worked with gem materials for 13 generations and the current family carver, Patrick Dreher, began his apprenticeship in 1988. The family creates fine carvings from agates and from single crystals of high-quality rough gem minerals. Their unique pieces are extraordinarily detailed and utilize natural color zoning to achieve a remarkably lifelike effect.

Intarsia boxes by the Master, Nicolai Medvedev present creations celebrated for their vibrant geometric designs, reminiscent of the motifs from Medvedev’s homeland. He meticulously selects and assembles a diverse array of gemstones – including Lapis Lazuli, Jasper, Malachite, and rare materials like dinosaur bone and Precious Opal – into harmonious compositions. Each piece is a testament to his patience, precision, and deep understanding of gem materials.

Finally, the exhibition also includes intricate pietra dura (gemstone inlay) and three-dimensional stone floral sculptures by Nikolai Mareseev, a world-renowned, master lapidary artist who specializes in museum-quality masterpieces which blend precious and semi-precious stones to create stunningly realistic objects d’art.

Our own priceless team of Debbie and Stew will be present at the show with a superb display of worldwide classic minerals from our Crystal Classics inventory. They do hope that you can join them, so if you are at the show pop along and say hello.

Next week, we bring you a selection of recent acquisitions. Have a wonderful week and enjoy Springfield if you can make it.

Please note: Today's featured specimens are situated at both our US and UK showrooms.
