Detailed information
In its entirely pure form, Fluorite - calcium fluoride - should be colourless, but like many things in nature things don't always work out perfectly and so more often than not Fluorite is coloured, based on trace element impurities. Finding perfect crystals of colourless Fluorite is a challenge, but there are a few key localities worldwide where crystals are to be found. This large cabinet display specimen from Huanggang Fe-Sn Deposit (No. 5 mine) in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China displays exceptionally well-formed intergrown colourless gemmy Fluorite crystals displaying cubic, octahedral and dodecahedral faces. These magnificent crystals of Fluorite measure up to 4.5 cm across and are in stunning condition. Despite showing no colour, the texture of these complex crystal faces is fascinating, with extremely glassy reflective cubic faces compared to a more matt lustre on the octahedral and dodecahedral faces caused by finely crystallized 'stepping'. The quality and size of this crystals on this piece from Huanggang Fe-Sn Deposit is remarkable. Ex Christian Weise Collection.
