A rare location specimen of well-crystallised Cassiterite on mica with a small Fluorapatite crystal, from Mount Bischoff mine, Waratah, Waratah district, Tasmania, Australia. Mount Bischoff was Tasmania’s first major mine, the ore deposit having been discovered by a farmer in 1871. Six Cassiterite crystals ranging from 5 mm to 1.9 cm across sit proudly on a flat, hard, dark grey matrix, possibly a quartzite, metamorphosed from country rock by pervasive localised past igneous activity. One of the three small Cassiterite crystals is translucent to semi-transparent and glows golden sherry brown in transmitted light. Interestingly, sitting amongst the surrounding platelets of Muscovite Mica is a solitary pale blue, truncated hexagonal Fluorapatite crystal. It’s very tiny but very nice!
