Detailed information

Species Pyromorphite, Baryte
Dimensions 77 x 101 x 42 mm
Locality Les Farges Mine Ussel, Corrèze Limousin, France
Condition No recorded repairs
Known for one of the greatest occurrences of Pyromorphite the Les Farges mine in Limousin, France is an iconic name when it comes to mineral collectors. Although the Pyromorphite there takes many forms, the most recognizable is the large orange-brown prisms with prominent yellow tips to their terminations. On the other hand, this superb cabinet specimen presents a completely different form. Still with the characteristic association with Baryte matrix, the Pyromorphite on this piece grows upwards like almost organic forms, starting with freestanding tapering prisms to about 1.2 cm in length with dark brown iron oxide coatings, but then often coated by a later generation of moss-like yellow-green Pyromorphite. So distinctive, this specimen demands attention. One or possibly two of the main Pyromorphite crystals are sheared off at their base, but this does not detract from the overall presentation which is superb. A classy Les Farges Pyromorphite.
