Not only is the calcium borate hydroxide hydrate mineral Nifontovite extremely rare - recorded from just four places on Earth - but large, visibly attractive crystals have only been found in the area around Charcas in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Good, smaller, perfectly formed crystals have been known from Charcas since the early 2000s, but in 2025 the scale of these crystals jumped significantly. World-class in size and crystal shape, this individual colourless transparent Nifontovite crystal reaches a staggering 8.1 cm in length and is a major step up in the quality of this very rare species. Rising like a glass skyscraper it tapers gently towards its termination with many tiny parallel crystal faces stepping upwards to its tip. There is no obvious chipping to its upper section and termination, and its surfaces look like ice.
