Romania has long been known for stunning specimens of crystallized Native Gold on matrix, with great examples seen in the earliest European collections (both private and in museums), and usually recorded as 'Hungary' due to the previous extent of the Hungarian Empire. Most specimens which come up for sale are from Roşia Montană which was worked way back in Roman times, but similar specimens occurred at Fata Baii (Facebánya) about 20 miles to the south, but are much rarer. This lovely miniature specimen comes from Fata Baii, and more specifically from Maria Stollen (mine). We know this because it is accompanied by two very old handwritten labels, one of which is affixed to the back of the specimen. Bright metallic intergrown wire and leaf Native Gold covers areas to 1.2 cm on crystals of Quartz with Galena and Sphalerite. Ex Simone and Peter Huber Collection (no. 1533).
