David Hardman had a knack of obtaining Native Copper specimens from the most unusual, or rarely seen localities and this fine miniature specimen from Ashio mine in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan is a classic example. Closed in 1973, this famous (in Japan) old copper mine dates back to the 1600s and black and white photographs online show that by the early 20th century it was a substantial operation. However, specimens of Native Copper from there are just never seen available. David was collecting from the 1960s onwards and so it is likely that he obtained this while the mine was still producing. A super, classic rarity from Japan, the Native Copper is nicely visible with a rich orange colour and historic patina.
