Detailed information
Mineralogy, or as the internal title states, Mineralogy for Amateurs, was published in 1964 by Van Nostrand Reinhold Company. Written by John Sinkankas, his concept for the book was to fill the void between very basic beginners guide and technical, college (university level) textbook. He achieved this extremely well in two main sections: the first, introducing the concepts of mineralogy; and the second dedicated to descriptive mineralogy, or systematic details of individual species and groups of minerals. In section one, the often overbearingly technical areas of atoms, mineral classification, crystal growth, crystal geometry, physical properties, specific gravity, optical properties and identification techniques are all presented in a simple, understandable way and although illustrated with black and white photographs his work has stood the test of time and is now regarded as a classic. 585 printed pages. This used softback is in fair condition with yellowing and slight creasing to its cover, but internally is in great condition.
