We all know that the Grossular var. Hessonite garnet crystals from Jeffrey mine in Québec, Canada can be amazing, but this large thumbnail specimen demonstrates it perfectly. Glassy, like cut gems, and with a rich cinnamon orange-brown colour, the Hessonite crystals already have much going for them, but it is their crystallographic perfection which really sets them apart. The main crystal on this piece is remarkable, with its main surface displaying a cross-like pattern, split into quadrants, each with stepped surfaces. It may only measure 6 x 6 mm, but it is a stunning crystal, and there are other wonderful crystals present too.
