Detailed information

Species Cobaltoan Calcite, Kolwezite, ps. after Chalcopyrite
Dimensions 73 x 94 x 54 mm
Weight 371 g
Locality Mashamba West Mine Kolwezi mining district Lualaba, DR Congo
Condition No recorded repairs
Large, pink, scalenohedral Cobaltoan Calcite crystals are extraordinarily rare from anywhere, even the famous Mashamba West mine, in Kolwezi mining district, DR Congo which has arguably produced the world's best. Even individual crystals only come around rarely, so to come across a cabinet-sized bed of crystals is the stuff of legends. Featuring at least 20 individual scalenohedral crystals, the largest of which is over 3 cm tall (and much more when the thickness of the bed is included), this is a spectacular display, with its colour certainly raising its attention amongst its viewers. However, if you thought that was all then you were wrong, as this stunner has much more to offer. Its dark pink scalenohedral crystals are covered in a myriad of complex stepped glassy faces, reflecting the light in countless directions, and these rise from an even more intense cerise-pink and pale pink banded bed of Cobaltoan Calcite seen strikingly in cross-section around the edges of the specimen base. Opaque pale pink at their base, the crystal's colour intensifies upwards, towards their terminations, as does their transparency/translucency and glassy lustre. Two or three of the scalenohedral crystals have cleaved surfaces where their terminations are missing, but the smooth glossy cleavage planes don't distract much from the overall high quality display that this specimen provides. Sparsely scattered uniformly across the crystallized surfaces of the Cobaltoan Calcite are small dark brown to bronze, silky, spherical masses of the rare species Kolwezite - copper cobalt carbonate. More obvious are larger Kolwezite masses (to 3 to 4 mm across) showing a relict crystal form, indicating that they are pseudomorphs after probable Chalcopyrite crystals. A spectacular large display bed of very large Cobaltoan Calcite crystals from the world's premier source in the Kolwezi mining district.
