Clausthalite is an uncommon lead selenium mineral but it is known from quite a number of localities in Germany, particularly in and around the Harz Mountains. The village of Tanne, from where this large thumbnail specimen comes, is not a well known source of Clausthalite, but it comes from an older systematic collection. Within this piece, Clausthalite forms finely crystallized dark grey areas in veinlets or zones within white Quartz or Calcite.
