Calcite - for a mineral so common worldwide - can sometimes take such distinctive forms and in combination with other species can be unique to one occurrence. This particular specimen cries out Sweetwater mine in the Viburnum Trend District, Reynolds Co., Missouri, USA. It is dominated by a 11.5 cm long, highly elongated cream coloured rounded scalenohedral Calcite crystal which is perched upon crystallized sulphides (Galena and Sphalerite). Not nearly so dramatic and gemmy as the similarly large display Calcite crystals on sulphide from Elmwood mine in Tennessee, these from Sweetwater mine are beautiful in their own way. On this large cabinet specimen the Calcite crystal is intact and displays the iconic Sweetwater form, but it is naturally very slightly etched. This crystal is not only large, but a superb example of the textbook elongated and rounded Sweetwater Calcite shape.
