For a mineral species as common as Calcite there are probably not as many places in the world that have produced exceptional quality crystals as you might think. In the early 1990s, a discovery at Rudny in Kostanay Province, Kazakhstan produced a crystal form that is now instantly recognizable from any other world occurrence. In this instance it is not only the shape of the crystals, but their colour and transparency which sets them apart. Often twinned, as seen in this wonderful small cabinet piece, the transparent pale amber-coloured Calcite crystals display exceptionally sharp, and complex, crystal faces, some with intricate growth lines on their surface. Attached to a small piece of matrix, this crystal is in excellent condition, with just a couple of light scuffs along its edges. The largest crystal reaches over 6 cm across. An exceptional Calcite from this iconic discovery.
