Bertrandite is a beryllium sorosilicate hydroxide which I am more used to seeing as individual rare crystals, especially in specimens from the British Isles. So when a specimen like this comes along, with a surface totally encrusted with superbly crystallised Bertrandite, seeing is believing! This choice large miniature is from Kara-Oba in the Karagandy Province of Kazakhstan. The Bertrandite forms creamy white translucent books and sprays to about 5 mm tall and covers a matrix of Quartz crystals averaging 5 cm long. One corner is punctuated with a patch of pale candy pink Rhodochrosite.
