Detailed information

Species Baryte, Sphalerite, Siderite
Dimensions 123 x 210 x 113 mm
Locality Force Crag Mine Coledale, Braithwaite District Cumbria, England
Condition No recorded repairs
This very large cabinet specimen is one of the finest examples of Baryte collected during the last phase of workings at Force Crag mine during the 1980s. The mine, which is at the head of a long valley west of the tourist town of Keswick, was reworked at that time for Baryte and was the last working mine in the Lake District. This specimen presents the classic crystallized form of Baryte from this mine - sheaf-like clusters of pale cream coloured tabular crystals. The individual 'blades' reach 5 cm in length and almost all are in immaculate condition, with just the odd bruise on those near to the edge of the specimen. The Baryte sits like an island upon a mass of intergrown, possibly brecciated Sphalerite-Siderite veinstone upon which one surface is covered in Sphalerite crystals to 1 cm in size. This is a spectacular specimen and certainly one of the best from this mine. Ex Michael Harris collection. Due to its weight and the fragile nature of the bladed Baryte crystals there may be an additional charge for postage.
