This is a proper European classic from an old-time occurrence. Axinite was first discovered to science in the late 18th century as the species "Violet Schorl" with the source being alpine clefts near Bourg d'Oisans in Isère, Rhône-Alpes, France. Now categorized as Axinite-(Fe) fine specimens still occasionally turn up, but more and more require daring rock climbing to locate the untapped crystal-lined crevices. This well-crystallized small cabinet specimen, showing glassy, sharp, triclinic bladed crystals is quite likely an older piece and comes from David Hardman's collection.
