The Frugal Collector, Volume 1 was published in 2011 by renowned author Bob Jones, former editor of Rock and Gem Magazine. This well-illustrated book is the culmination of many decades of articles previously published in Rock and Gem Magazine assembled in an easily accessible form. As the title suggests, Jones (1926-2024) imparts his many years of experience collecting and writing about minerals in the form of guidance on how to collect minerals on a budget and how to spot bargins. Across 16 chapters he covers both individual mineral species as well as chemically related groups of minerals. These are not only common species such as Calcite and Baryte, but also rarer finds, such as copper arsenates famous from Cornwall, England, that sometimes are hidden in older collections.
