A stunning naturally etched light burgundy-red Spessartine garnet on Quartz from the Navegadora Claim at Conselheiro Pena, Minas Gerais, Brazil, within the Aimor's pegmatite district. The etched morphology produces a reticulated effect amongst the complexity of the Spessartine crystal faces. The crystal, which extends to 3.9 x 3.6 cm, has exceptional lustre and grades from gemmy to translucent, the latter being more a function of the thickness rather than the quality of the crystal. The milky-white Quartz matrix is also attractive, displaying a similar amount of etching. Both Spessartine and Quartz have a bright glassy lustre and once back-lit the Spessartine glows a magnificent pigeon-blood red. These Spessartine crystals are uniquely different to other world occurrences of this manganese garnet in both their complex 'futuristic' form and exceptional colour. Most specimens came from a cavity which was uncovered in 2003. A superb Spessartine miniature which comes with its own custom-made acryllic Sunnywood display stand.
