This cobalt-rich variety of Smithsonite, from the Tsumeb mine in Namibia, is a fine example because of its vivid bubble gum pink colour. Such Smithsonite has always been termed Cobaltian Smithsonite, but this name now appears to have fallen from favour and is simply labelled as Smithsonite with the added note of cobalt rich. The crystals average 1.5 cm wide and are translucent with internal paler pink cores. Transmitted light makes the internal zones glow, lending a metallic glint to the inner structure. The crystals sit on a narrow rib of Smithsonite included with dark metal sulphides. An eye-catching miniature cobalt rich Smithsonite from Tsumeb.
