This miniature specimen from Ringvassøya - a remote island within the Arctic Circle in the far north of Norway - is from one of a small number of gold prospects on the island. It is certainly not the richest specimen of Native Gold that you will come across, but here it is the rarity of the location. The specimen consists of a spongey porous Quartz matrix, possibly brought about by the weathering away of a sulphide, leaving behind the cavities within which tiny flecks of bright metallic Native Gold can be seen. It comes from the superb systematic collection assembled by the brothers Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021).
