A stunning specimen of mirror-bright, jet black Hematite with associated salmon-pink Andradite garnet from the classic Wessels mine at Hotazel in the Kalahari Manganese Field of South Africa. The Hematite forms a group of highly lustrous, intergrown crystals, the largest of which is 3.7 cm long. Some of the crystals look as if twinned, but on examination this appears to be then angle at which some single crystals intersect one another. The Andradite garnet forms as micro-crystals, just 0.1 to 0.2 mm across, but the rich coating adds a good contrast of matt salmon-pink to the highly reflective black Hematite. An excellent Hematite from Wessels mine, which is renowned for such specimens.
