This dense thin bed of crystallized Galena, as sharp octahedral crystals was collected underground in the forefield on 50 fathom level at Golconda mine in May 1986. This famous Derbyshire mine is better known for its secondary mineral species such as Hemimorphite and Aurichalcite, but as seen here the primary mineralization is well crystallized too. The Galena crystals on this plate are partially oxidized, with alteration initially to Cerussite (lead carbonate) and then followed by a thin film of rusty orange iron oxides. The Galena crystals are in remarkably good shape considering their alteration and their orange coating provides a little more colour. A fine crystallized Derbyshire Galena. Ex John A. Jones Collection, no. 86058, collected in May 1986.
