Few localities produce mineral specimens that are instantly recognizable. Riemvasmaak in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa is one. It is true that similar green coloured octahedral Fluorite crystals have been found at other localities in the world, but they are a subtly different shade of green and crucially are found intimately associated with sulphides or other distinctive species, whilst these South African specimens are usually pure, or just on plain white Quartz. This particular example is a wonderful group of bright, tangy-peppermint-green octahedral Fluorite crystals. The main crystal measures an impressive 5.5 x 4.3 x 4 cm high, with the faces composed of flattened triangular crystal developments. A matrix-less specimen, the main crystal is attached to a smaller group of the same colour and morphology.
