Locality
Avala Mines Mt. Avala, Belgrade Serbia
Condition
No recorded repairs
A rich vein of cochineal-maroon-red Cinnabar sandwiched within a banded white Quartz-vein matrix. Within the Cinnabar vein, a 2.3 x 1 cm cavity is mostly lined with deep blood red prismatic Cinnabar crystals, each to several millimetres. Under strong light these show the most intense blood red inclusions/internal fire. From the Avala mines in Serbia this is a great example of vein mineralisation, made more unusual due to the presence of Cinnabar, a mercury sulphide. The specimen comes with two handwritten old labels, one appearing very old, the other, from Simone and Peter Huber recording that they acquired it in 1984.
