A 'flower'-like aggregate of deep blue Azurite crystals sits, perched upon a dappled greenish and cream-orange coloured gossany sandstone matrix. At 3.2 cm across, the nodule of Azurite crystals is a good, prominent size and is in excellent condition for this famous, if not vague, locality in Utah. Fine Azurite specimens have been known from the La Sal Mountains in San Juan Co./Grand Co. for many decades and are sometimes labelled as from the La Sal Mountain Mining District. However, they appear to have come from a road cut, rather than a mine, but perhaps this rich secondary copper mineralization relates in some way to a porphyry copper deposit in the area. Their typical habit is tightly clustered deep blue crystals in nodules, but most often the Azurite is detached from matrix, making this small cabinet-sized matrix specimen very nice indeed.
