Blackbird Mine Complex in Lemhi Co., Idaho, USA is renowned as having produced the finest Vivianite specimens in the USA, but that was back in the 1950s and 1960s. Specimens are now uncommonly seen, except when older collections get dispersed. This old-timer from David Hardman's collection is a rare cabinet-sized doubly-sided specimen featuring Vivianite crystals to over 4.5 cm in length. The bladed crystals form 'star-burst' sprays lying flat on the rock matrix on both sides of the specimen and display glossy dark coloured surfaces. Some of the crystals are terminated, but their form is quite variable. There is some damage to crystals where they attached to others, or to the opposite side of cavities before the specimen was extracted, but overall this is an extremely rich Vivianite from this important American locality.
