This is an extremely rich small miniature Veszelyite from the now famous Chinese discovery at Sanguozhuang Pb-Zn mine, Dongchuan District, Kunming, Yunnan. This mine has, in recent years, produced the world's finest specimens of Veszelyite - copper zinc phosphate hydrate hydroxide - as spectacularly rich encrustations and individual crystals. This specimen is one of the few I have seen where the residual primary mineralization is exposed, providing a glimpse into its paragenesis. With a central core of Galena, oxidation extends outwards to pale green, white and blue secondary species. The final phase, encrusting everything else, is the stunningly well-crystallized Veszelyite as deep royal blue to electric blue glossy crystals in a layer 2.5 to 5 mm in thickness. Underneath this are patches of feathery pearlescent blue-green Tyrolite/Tangdanite and massive white Hemimorphite. Other areas of mint-green are possibly a Dongchuanite Group mineral but have not been analysed. The Veszelyite crystals are aggregated as curved, serrated, blade-like masses with an attractive resinous lustre. Although the crystals are not individual or freestanding, it is the absolute richness of this rare species on this piece that is superb and under magnification it looks stunning. It is certainly not often that a rare species looks this good.
