The classic European mining area of Cavnic in Romania was widely regarded as having produced the world's best Tetrahedrite specimens for their sharpness, form and size, but what do we mean by Tetrahedrite? In recent years the whole Tetrahedrite-Tennantite series has been completely redefined and without detailed chemical data on these Cavnic crystals they should now technically be labelled as 'Tetrahedrite Subgroup', but I am sure collectors will still stick with Tetrahedrite. Well-formed tetrahedral crystals of Tetrahedrite richly adorn this stunning small cabinet specimen from Cavnic. The metallic grey highly reflective crystals of Tetrahedrite measure up to 1.8 cm on edge and are aesthetically positioned on a drusy of translucent white Quartz. Areas of light yellow Pyrite have formed on the Quartz, associated with the magnificent crystals of Tetrahedrite. The matrix is a mixture of Quartz with embedded bright cubic crystals of Pyrite.
