Francon quarry in Montréal, Québec, Canada is best known as the Type Locality for Weloganite, a complex sodium strontium zirconium carbonate hydrate, but with all that strontium in the rocks it is no surprise that Strontianite occurs too. Much of the Strontianite at Francon quarry occurs as small white acicular crystals and sprays but occasionally, larger, waxy, pale yellow, somewhat spherical crystals occur. This small cabinet specimen displays this latter form extremely well, and in very large crystals for the locality - up to 9 mm in diameter. Still famous, the quarry closed in 1981 and there is no possibility of it ever reopening due to the surrounding urban sprawl. Specimens like this are rare and a finite resource.
