Phantom Quartz is where, during the growth process of a crystal a chemical change occurs resulting in a change in colour through inclusions, or a layer of another mineral, followed by the onset of more growth, making the crystal larger and encapsulating the outline of the smaller crystal within. This example from São João da Chapada, Diamantina, Minas Gerais, Brazil is large and very displayable. The main Quartz crystal is slightly smoky in appearance and forms a well balanced hexagonal prism terminated with a six-sided pyramid. A smaller, but very well-formed terminated Quartz splays off from the base at an angle of about 40 degrees.
