This extremely fine bed of gemmy Smoky Quartz crystals is from the Smokey Bear Quartz Claims, in the White Mountain-Wilderness district of the Sacramento Mountains in Lincoln County, New Mexico. The Smokey Bear Quartz Claims (and note, in the case of this locality name, Smokey is spelt with an “e”) comprise of two nearby claims, the Sierra Blanca and the Mina Tiro Estrella. Although the specific claim is not recorded with the specimen, based on the excellent, first hand description on mindat which differentiates specimens from the two claims, this would certainly appear to be from Sierra Blanca. A 16.3 cm long, terminated Smoky Quartz crystal rests horizontally across a bed densely covered with gemmy, acicular Smoky Quartz crystals to about 2.5 cm. All the Quartz crystals are of simple-prismatic habit and tend to be medium to dark smoky with occasional pale crystals, a characteristic of Quartz from Sierra Blanca. A beautiful and very displayable large cabinet specimen of Smoky Quartz, with one mega-crystal(!) from Smokey Bear in New Mexico.
