Granite pegmatites at Dolní Bory, near Ždár nad Sázavou, Vysocina Region, Moravia (Mähren), Czech Republic have long been known to produce good Smoky Quartz crystals, but generally in smaller individual crystals. Some fine dark smoky crystals were recovered during the 1970s and 1980s, but this huge individual squat pyramidal pale Smoky Quartz crystal is a stunner. Its base is a rough surface of Milky Quartz where it was removed from the cavity but upwards its short prism faces are extremely glassy and smoky-brown in colour. The pyramidal termination is glassy and brown too, and the sloping faces very large in relation to the rest of the crystal. Some of these pyramidal faces show the beginnings of skeletal form, in what is known as "Fenster" or "Window" Quartz. This is a spectacular Eastern European Quartz crystal and at over 13 cm across it is worthy of a museum, or collection of the highest quality. Ex Hans Engelbrecht collection.
