Although some might consider this Wiesloch Smithsonite a little dull and, dare I suggest, ugly, to me it has a real charm, a specimen which stands out even when surrounded by louder, more showy and colourful specimens. Wiesloch is a remarkably historic mining district where silver and lead mining is known to date to both Roman and Celtic times. The Smithsonite forms deeply furrowed botryoidal mounds of light chocolate brown with an orange cast over mixed Sphalerite, Baryte and Galena, forming bands of what is termed Schalenblende. These complexly intermixed species cover a block of massive metallic, silver Galena. An attractive and fascinating miniature from Wiesloch in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, accompanied by two previous labels.
