We all know about the diversity of Smithsonite colours and crystal forms from Tsumeb mine, but sometimes an unusual habit crops up which peaks ones attention. This large miniature to smaller cabinet sized Smithsonite is one such interesting piece. Forming a somewhat angular specimen, fragments of chalky-white Dolomitized limestone are thickly coated with large Smithsonite crystals. These crystals display a subdued by noticeable colour zoning from pale orange to cream but it is their shape which is intriguing. They are rhombic in form, but the rhombs are quite flattened and with uneven stepped crystal faces. Most of the crystals are over 6 mm across, but many reach 1.4 cm which makes them quite visible. They all show a wonderful pearlescent lustre making for a very charming display. A very fine Tsumeb Smithsonite. Ex Weyand collection.
