El Refugio mine at Choix, Mun. de Choix, Sinaloa, Mexico is world renowned for the quality of its Smithsonite, but more so for the diverse variety of colours. This large miniature specimen is simply documented as from Choix, but it appears that the only producer of significant Smithsonite in that area is El Refugio mine. Forming a 1.5 cm thick botryoidal layer upon a fragment of dark grey rock, the Smithsonite here is white until its outer layer, when it transitions to an orange colour, with the classic greasy lustre displayed by the best Smithsonites.
