This is a fine historic example of the 'scale'-like habit of Siderite from the famous Virtuous Lady mine at Buckland Monachorum in Devon. Virtuous Lady mine is renowned for wonderful Siderite in many different forms and as epimorphous casts after Baryte and Fluorite. This one is not an epimorph, just wonderfully crystallized Siderite pure and simple. The Siderite is partially coated with finely crystallized Pyrite, a common feature at this mine, but the specimen is an old one and the Pyrite quite stable. Indeed, one of the labels in the large set accompanying the specimen is from Col. G.T.G. Williams of Bodmin, a descendant of the great Williams family of mineral collectors in Cornwall. Ex Malcolm Southwood collection, no. MS 2012.085, ex Ian and Kim Acworth collection (no. CW98) and ex Paul Lowe.
