Despite being an iron carbonate, the density of Siderite has never really struck me until lifting this pure and remarkably fine cabinet specimen, with a specific gravity 3.96. This is an outstanding, smack-you-in-the-chops large cabinet specimen composed entirely of lustrous Siderite crystals forming gently curved rhombic prisms. The crystals average around 1.5 cm on edge yet do attain 2 cm. From Hüttenberg in Carinthia, Austria, the Siderite crystals are opaque with a translucent outer shell and are a fairly uniform golden biscuit deep tan, like a digestive biscuit spread with syrup! Examined close to with a low power lens, the stacked curved and slightly offset corners make good analogies of the roof of the Sidney Opera House. This museum quality specimen that will look magnificent displayed.
