Dark chocolate-brown, rhombohedral prisms of Siderite form an intergrown cluster over a matrix of massive Siderite. Accompanied by what appears a very old label in copperplate handwriting, this is a fine specimen from Hüttenberg in the Friesach-Hüttenberg area of Carinthia, Austria. Each rhomb is typically about 1 cm on its longest edge and although the majority of the crystal faces have a bright, glassy lustre, they also have dappled patches of matt chocolate brown, as if sprinkled with coco powder. What’s not to love about a finely crystallised Siderite, reminiscent of chocolate in so many ways!
