Mention Graves Mountain and just one mineral comes to mind, Rutile. Situated in Lincoln County, Georgia, USA, this hillside quarry worked a Quartz-Sericite-Kyanite-Pyrite deposit for Kyanite. Although 36 species are recorded for the location, it is the magnificent Rutile for which is has become world famous. This is a beautiful and spectacular miniature with a fabulous, near-equant 1.6 x 1.6 x 2.0 cm lustrous metallic Rutile twinned crystal perched on a matrix of Goethite. The Goethite forms a bladed honeycomb structure which includes a patch of colourful iridescent goethite. The Rutile is sharply well crystallised, appearing almost black, but with hints of deep clove towards the edges of certain faces. A terrific example of twinned Rutile from Graves Mountain.
