The N'Chwaning mines at the Kalahari Manganese Field in N. Cape Province, South Africa are without question the source of the world's finest Rhodochrosite crystals, but these manganese mines have also provided a diverse range of Rhodochrosite forms. The most obvious, and valuable, are the intense cherry-red to raspberry-red gemmy 'dog's-tooth' form, especially when they are aggregated in impressive layered beds. This soft-pink coloured sugary textured botryoidal Rhodochrosite miniature is very different, but still very pretty and in excellent condition, growing outwards over a small dark brown manganese oxide-rich core.
