Detailed information

Species Rhodochrosite
Dimensions 41 x 66 x 26 mm
Weight 112 g
Locality N'Chwaning Mines Kuruman, Kalahari Mn. Field N. Cape Province, South Africa
Condition No recorded repairs
Rhodochrosite from probably the all-time greatest occurrence: N'Chwaning mines in the Kalahari Mn. Field, South Africa. Written about and copiously illustrated in the Manganese Adventure books beauties like this Rhodochrosite were discovered initially by chance in the N'Chwaning manganese mines during the 1970s, and their quality has simply never been surpassed. Even the great Sweet Home mine rhodo's for all of their magnificence in presentation, with their contrast of red on white, cannot match the intensity and gemminess of the best N'Chwaning mines specimens. This really is a magnificent piece, smaller cabinet in size (or extremely large miniature), which absolutely glows with an intense raspberry-red colour and extremely glossy and glassy lustre. It really is a very special piece, with the Rhodochrosite forming a layer of exceptionally glossy crystals, many of which are alligned parallel to each other. The crystals are 'dog-tooth' scalenohedra in form, but modified with flattened terminations. There is a little minor surface bruising in places, but this really requires magnification and does not impact the sheer presence that this specimen gives off. The back of the specimen is a layer of massive black manganese oxides. A majestic N'Chwaning Rhodochrosite of exceptional colour.
