Although the famous Florence mine close to Egremont in west Cumbria produced less than ten different mineral species, all of these can crystallize in the most exquisite way. This small cabinet specimen has about 16 semi-transparent, double terminated Quartz crystals richly placed across a thin matrix of 'kidney ore' Hematite coated with lustrous cream-white Dolomite crystals and black metallic 'specular' Hematite. The Quartz crystals measure to 2.2 cm across; are slightly smoky and contain inclusions of finely-divided 'specular' Hematite, and most importantly are in exceptional condition. This beautiful example of Quartz with associated minerals is from the Bill Creighton collection, no. WC.19, and is, as one expect, an extremely fine example. Bill was one of the most famous collectors in Cumbria during the late 20th century: operating a museum and shop in Keswick and later on in Cockermouth.
