This charming miniature Quartz from the Heißer Stein mine, in Wölsendorf Fluorite Mining District, Upper Palatinate, Bavaria, Germany gets full marks for trying to pack every variety of Quartz into one. Firstly, on the back, white triangular patterns are enclosed in purple, showing how an early Milky Quartz core has been overgrown by a 8 to 10 mm wide layer of Amethyst. Above this and towards the top (display) surface, is a thin (2 to 3 mm) layer of Milky Quartz that grades into colourless terminations, but some of the larger terminated crystals are included with red iron oxides, producing the variety of Quartz known as Eisenkiesel. A smaller, but devilishly funky Quartz from this famous German mine.
