When it comes to Mexican Amethyst, Mina La Sorpressa at Amatitlán in the south of the country falls under the radar compared with the more abundant finds at Piedra Parada in Veracruz. This very large miniature to small cabinet-sized specimen presents a superb example of its quality, transparent, with a lovely pale purple colour and featuring characteristic tapering prismatic crystals with three dominant prism sides and three thinner edges. The largest crystal reaches 2.5 cm in length and apart from about three missing crystals, fractured off at their base, the crystals present are in excellent condition and rising up from this small plate they display really nicely. A really fine smaller display of this less-often seen Mexican Amethyst.
