Amatitlán is a locality with only one recorded mineral, Quartz and lies within the Eduardo Neri Municipality of Guerrero State in Mexico. However, the locality produces Amethyst crystals of such quality they are now considered some of the best in the world. This magnificent specimen has one primary crystal almost 15 cm in length, around whose prism faces are clustered several, much smaller yet very well formed crystals. Before giving any further description, let it be made clear this specimen has undergone quite extensive repair and restoration in a professional laboratory. The specimen is accompanied with two printed photos overdrawn to show where both forms of lab work have been conducted. Held under a strong UV lamp (and I mean strong), the repaired and restored zones are readily highlighted by their fluorescence. The work is quite remarkable as I find it impossible to identify where it’s been done (under normal lighting conditions). The crystals are a splendid violet purple with each crystal, large or small, containing wispy veils and filaments in shades of violet distributed throughout. A stunning Amethyst, repaired and restored to its original perfection.
