Of the many famous Fluorite producing mines in Weardale, Blackdene by the village of Ireshopeburn is one of the top favourites amongst mineral collectors. This choice example of colourless, gemmy Quartz crystals preferentially coating large cubic Fluorite crystals in varying shades of purple makes for a fine display specimen of medium cabinet size. The largest Fluorite crystal measures exactly 4 cm on edge and all vary in the intensity of purple from pale lilac and lavender to blackberry. So typical of Blackdene mine, the pale tan tinted Quartz crystals preferentially coat certain sides of the Fluorite crystals, indicating its “way-up” while in situ. The Fluorite displays moderate daylight fluorescence.
