The late 1990s to early 2000s finds of Pyromorphite at Daoping mine, in Gongcheng Co., Guilin Prefecture, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China are justifiably regarded as some of the most important aesthetic crystallized specimens of the species, and that is saying something with the competition out there. As with many Pyromorphite occurrences there was some variation in terms of colour, lustre and crystal shape across the deposit and this wonderful small cabinet-sized display specimen presents the remarkable 'wet' lustre, waxy to resinous, yellow-green crystals with complex hoppered terminations. Lining an open cavity in a cream coloured rock matrix the largest individual crystal reaches over 1.5 cm in length and presents the inverse tapering form for which this locality is famed, with the crystal starting narrow and widening towards its termination in complex stepped progressions, but recessed, or hoppered internally. Others present bevelled edges around their flat hexagonal termination, but there is some much amazing crystallographic detail to be enjoyed here. This, combined with its glorious colour and mesmerizing lustre makes for a truly world-class Pyromorphite, from this world-class discovery.
