When one thinks of manganese oxides and Germany, the understandable inclination is to go to Manganite from Ilfeld in the Harz Mountains in the northernmost part of Thuringia. The best Manganite crystals are true world-beaters, and by some considerable distance, but Germany has produced some of the world's best Pyrolusite crystals too. Not from Ilfeld, but the Gremmelsbach area in the southwest of Germany. This extremely well-crystallized Pyrolusite, with crystals reaching a significant length of over 5 cm, is a perfect example. The large, shiny, grey metallic acicular Pyrolusite crystals fan outwards from pale coloured host rock, interlocking like fingers with similar-sized Pyrolusite crystals from the same side of the pocket/vein. Some of the tips of the crystal are not terminated, but this is combination of where they met with others on the other side of the vein as well as some damage perhaps during collecting, or afterwards With a stunning metallic grey appearance and fine bladed form, this crystallized Pyrolusite is certainly world-class.
