A highly unusual and aesthetic example of Pyrite on Quartz from an unknown mine in Freiberg within Erzgebirge, Saxony, Germany. Quartz forms a 4.5 x 4.0 x 3.0 cm matrix through which bright, golden Pyrite is disseminated and also forms micro-cubic crystals on some surfaces. Its top surface is covered with small, pinkish terminated Quartz crystals over which a 3 x 1.7 cm area is coated with iridescent, concave-faced Pyrite crystals. These are formed from composite cubes whose faces are divided by blocky growth patterns and stepped faces whose centres are depressed inwards, forming concave faces all around. The combination of this unusual morphology, together with the steely-blue surfaces surrounded by buttery golden Pyrite makes a terrific, largish miniature.
