At 13.5 cm tall, this Ray mine crystallized Native Copper is not only large, but is full of character. Its bright metallic lustre and strong copper-orange colour is really intense. The crystals are blocky and somewhat interlocked with the whole specimen showing a very 3-dimensional form, rather than the more common, flatter, 2-dimensional dendritic sprays that are seen from Ray mine. This 3-dimensional form also means that it forms a substantial mass of metallic copper, weighing in at over 900 g. Isolated grains of white Quartz and patches of probable Cuprite can also be seen locked in between the Native Copper crystals. This famous old mine is a large opencast porphyry copper deposit which has been mined since 1911.
